The idea of affordable design is coming of age, and it's maturing quickly. New York's latest addition is Hotel QT, a minimal but well designed hotel that offers rooms for under $200 a night. There are more examples, such as YOtel in the UK. The Trendwatching site has more information on this emerging consumer trend, that they call "no-frills chic."

One of my coworkers and I stopped in at this place to have a drink in the bar immediately after it opened. They've got a friggin' pool in the lobby and you can swim up and order drinks at the bar (the likelyhood of this outrageously small considering it looks like a modernists deli from the front and the whole establishment is no more than 20 feet wide).
